6 Fun Facts about Bees

There’s so much to be said about bees.  They have so many countless species and they’re scattered all across the globe, each specialized in some way that sets them apart from the next.  While I’d love to do an article on each one one day, but unfortunately my life expectancy is less than infinity.  With that in mind however, I figure it’d still be good to touch on some of the facts you may not be aware of, that are a bit less species exclusive than others!

One for example, is that some have learned how to make a better use of the garbage swirling around the city!  At least two species of leafcutter bees in urban areas were see using things such as plastic bags or polyurethane sealant to build their homes, or even use them like drywall.  The thing is, these bees don’t build their own hives, but rather stitch them together, if you will.  Most often they’ll use plant materials, but if there isn’t much around, they’ll use whatever they can find.

Next up, we’re not the only ones who get a buzz from coffee!  Caffeine effects bees in a similar way that it does us, and it’s something that’s abundant in the nectar of citrus flowers or coffee beans!

Similarly, bees also enjoy their sweets, or at least the plants full of sugar-laced nectar!  Each time their claw would taste sugar, they’d stick their tongue out in enjoyment!

Fourth, bees have a tendency to dance.  They specifically do this to communicate however, and most commonly use it to discuss flowers to tell the others where they’ll find what.

Fifth, they can be awesome at Halloween decorating!  But in an intensely dark way.  This is specifically true of the Bone-house Wasp, which lines the cavity of it’s home with ant corpses, only to use the bodies to seal of the entrances after they lay their eggs.

Finally, bees can be all along the spectrum to subtle to shouting when it comes to discovering nectar.  As far as the second is concerned, it’s typically done by way of pheromone trails, likely intended as a warning for bees of other colonies to stay away.

There’s definitely a lot more than meets the eye with these guys!
